DePuy Orthopedics, a unit of Johnson & Johnson, recently recalled its ASR XL
Acetabular hip replacement system because of problems associated with the device. The
DePuy ASR hip replacement system is designed with metal-on-metal bearings, which can
generate debris from wear, causing inflammation and tissue damage.
Individuals who have had the Depuy ASR hip implant installed have sought medical treatment related to unexplained hip pain or hip failure, and some have had to get a second hip replacement. For over two years, the Food and Drug Administration has been nvestigating complaints that the devices failed early in some patients, necessitating operations to put in new hip replacements.
Johnson & Johnson is advising persons who have had hip replacements with Depuy
ASR to visit their surgeons for an evaluation and annual monitoring. Individuals with
a small stature, such as women and those with weak bones, may be more susceptible to
failure of DePuy ASR hip implants. However, potential lawsuits are being pursued for
all individuals who have experienced complications after their hip surgery.
DePuy Orthopedics failed to adequately test and research their metal-on-metal hip
implant before bringing it to market. Because of the product’s design defect, thousands
of people have received a defective DePuy ASR hip and could experience unnecessary
complications and problems.
If you have had a DePuy ASR hip implant and have experienced complications, please
